The city is set along the Tiber, visible in the left-hand corner of the drawing. It is crossed by two stone bridges. The city’s port activity can be seen in the boats moored on the quays and the warehouses nearby. The first theater on the riverbank is the Marcellus Theater. Behind it stands the Theater of Balbus, flanked by a pleasure garden lined with porticoes. In the upper left-hand corner, you can see the group of Republican temples on Largo Argentina. The capitol rises in the center of the drawing, on a green promontory that groups together several temples. The city’s various forums can be seen on the right-hand side of the drawing. The Forum of Augustus is on the right. A square courtyard, lined with porticoes, houses the temple. It is preceded by the Basilica of Maxentius and the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. Facing it are the Curia and the Forum Romanum, with the Arch of Septimius Severus. Trajan’s forum is on his right. It comprises a vast rectangular courtyard ending in a circular arc. It is flanked by the basilica and a semicircular market. The Trajan column stands behind the basilica, in front of a temple.
