Frontal view of a fight between a venator and a panther in the amphitheater of Lugdunum (Lyon). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
In the center of the arena, amidst a backdrop, venatores fight wild beasts. In the foreground, a lioness lies lifeless, an arrow stuck in her throat. In the background, two venatores can be seen. One is thrusting his spear into the chest of a panther, while the second is aiming his bow at a lion. In the background, a third is taming a bear and a bull with a whip.
These scenes are inspired by the mosaics in Rome’s Villa Borghese and the murals on Pompeii’s podium.
