Front view of a gladiatorial combat in the amphitheater of the Three Gauls in Lugdunum (Lyon). The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
In the amphitheater arena, in front of the imperial lodge, two gladiators clash under the watchful gaze of the referee (summa rudis) holding his staff. In the middle of the fight, a retiaire and a secutor face each other. The retiaire, on the left, is armed with a trident and a net (rete). He is wearing neither helmet nor shield. The net on the ground in the foreground shows that the retiaire must now fight with his trident. The secutor, on the right, is probably armed with a dagger (pugio). He is protected on the arm by a manica segmented with metal or leather scales, a helmet with a low, rounded crest that allows him to slide the net of the retiaire, a leggings (ocrea) fitted with a crossed leather lace and finally a long rectangular shield (scutum).
The scene is inspired by a mosaic from the villa at Nennig.
