Aerial view of Thamugadi (Timgad). The drawing is in landscape format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins.
The town lies on a plateau at the foot of the Aures mountains, visible in the background. It is built on an orthonormal plan, irregular in the western suburbs at the bottom of the drawing. Two thermal baths were built to the north and south. They can be identified by the roofs marking the various baths and by the smoke rising from them. The forum is located in the center of the city. It comprises a courtyard bordered by a colonnaded portico and the civil basilica. It is surrounded, on the left, by a public library and, on the right, by a theater. In the lower part of the drawing, you can see Trajan’s Arch. It is built at the intersection of two roads lined with porticoes. Nearby are the Temple of the Genius of the Colony and the open-air market of Sertius. The Capitol is located on the lower right. The temple is set within a courtyard bordered by a colonnaded portico.
