Aerial view of Siracusa (Syracuse), 4th century BC. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The city developed on the Mediterranean coast, partly on the coast and partly on an island. The port and warehouses are located between the two strips of land. A vast fortified enclosure, punctuated by towers, protects the city, built in a checkerboard pattern. The forum and temples are set amidst the housing. Fields were cultivated on the outskirts of the city.
