Aerial view of Simithu (Chemtou), 3rd c. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The city lies at the foot of a mountain (a marble quarry) and on the banks of a stream that flows through fields. The forum stands at the center of the city, among the residential buildings. It comprises a vast courtyard lined with porticoes, a temple and administrative buildings. The theater is nearby. It is flanked by a peristyle. The city’s water supply is provided by an aqueduct, visible on the left of the drawing. It supplies the thermal baths at its mouth. A military prison camp is located on the other side of the
of the mountain.
