Aerial view of Pompey’s theater in Rome. The drawing is in portrait format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins.
The theater is set amidst residential buildings. Its façade is composed of two levels of arcaded galleries, topped by a blind attic. At the center of the semi-circular cavea is a temple dedicated to Venus Victrix. The tiered cavea is enclosed by a stage wall (frons scaenae). It is decorated with two levels of niches and colonnades. A sumptuous pleasure garden surrounded by porticoes takes up the rear of the building.
