Presentation :

Aerial view of Caesar’s pyre in the Forum of Rome. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. The upper part of the drawing is completed with a piece glued to the support sheet.
The pyre takes its place in the forum. The body of the deceased is set ablaze. Augustus was to build the temple of Divus Iulius on this site. A crowd of people gather in the square for the event. In the background stands the Basilica Julia, still under construction. The curia is visible in the foreground. It was erected on the site of the Comitium, the circular outline of which is clearly visible.
