Overhead view, from a building, of the emperor’s entrance through the Porta Aurea in Ravenna. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the margins.
The scene depicts the Emperor’s triumphal entry into Ravenna. The imperial procession crosses the two arches of the Porta Aurea. The emperor is at the head of the procession, preceded by two horsemen. He is shown in the center of the drawing, riding a white mount. Wearing a cuirass and paludamentum, he makes a gesture of authority. The imperial procession is made up of armored horsemen and legionaries on foot. The locals have come to witness the scene.
