Overhead view of a gate in the wall of Carthago (Carthage). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. Inscriptions appear on the reverse. The city walls and fortress are painted on a paper base glued to a blue watercolor background representing the sky.
The city wall, pierced by a monumental gate, is in the foreground. A long staircase leads up to the hill of Byrsa, home to the temple of Eshmoun, of which only the walls can be seen. An entrance door, flanked by two Corinthian columns supporting an entablature, leads into the sanctuary. On either side of the staircase are the dwellings of the district.
