Frontal view of the Porte Saint-Marcel and the enclosure on the left bank of Paris, during the reign of Philippe Auguste. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. In the foreground, on a lane leading to the gate, a couple are heading towards the city, while two horsemen and a man carrying a bundle are leaving. On the right, a woman works in an orchard. Beneath the gate, a man and a cart can be seen. On the lane running alongside the enclosure, a man pulls a donkey and a cart carrying a barrel. The sky is gray.
