Aerial view of Paris, between Notre-Dame and the south wall, late 13th – early 14th century. The drawing is in landscape format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the margins.
The city is located on the banks of the Seine and on the Île de la Cité. It is enclosed within a fortified wall, punctuated by towers and pierced by gates, visible on the right of the drawing. On the left, you can see the Hôtel de Ville district, with Place Grève and its harbour. Notre-Dame Cathedral and Hôtel Dieu stand on the Île de la Cité. The Petit Pont links the island to the mainland. To the right of the drawing is the left bank of Paris. The Cluny thermal baths, partly in ruins, stand amidst the houses. Several religious buildings take their place in the urban fabric. In the lower part of the drawing, you can see the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève. On the right, the countryside takes shape. Farms and mills populate the landscape.
