Aerial view of the Temple of Bel in Palmyra. The drawing is in landscape format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Inscriptions are visible in the margins. Only part of the lower margin has been preserved.
The temple is protected by a fortified enclosure, decorated with engaged Corinthian pilasters and crowned with triangular merlons. It is pierced by a monumental gateway preceded by a portico and staircase. The temple stands at the center of a vast courtyard bordered by a colonnaded portico. It comprises a cella surrounded by a Corinthian peristyle, with a monumental doorway. Access is via a long staircase. The city can be seen in the distance.
