Aerial view of Massilia (Marseille) in Roman times. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The city lies between the Mediterranean Sea and a fortified enclosure to the east, shown in the lower part of the drawing. The port is located to the south, on the coast. Several ships are moored here. Cargo is stored in warehouses on the quayside. To the rear, in the upper part of the drawing, a forum and a theater flanked by two temples can be seen. A second sanctuary, further to the east and on higher ground, stands among the dwellings. The city is supplied with water by an aqueduct, visible in the lower part of the drawing.
