Aerial view of Marseille in the 15th c. The drawing is in landscape format, organized within a frame drawn in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. A sketch and inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The city is built along a bay on the Mediterranean coast, visible on the left of the drawing. It is surrounded by a fortified wall, pierced by gates and punctuated by towers. The port and commercial activities of the city can be seen in the center of the drawing. Boats are moving about or moored on the quayside. A number of religious buildings stand among the dwellings. Windmills stand on the heights. The access channel is closed off by Fort Saint-Jean to the north and Fort Saint-Nicolas to the south. The Saint-Victor basilica and agricultural fields can be seen on this bank. The hills of Marseille can be seen in the distance.
