Presentation :

Front view of the Dura-Europos shield. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. Marks for a drawing are visible on the back.
It is a cartographic representation on a fragment of leather. The region depicted is the Pont-Euxin, i.e. the basin of today’s Black Sea. In the center, boats sail on the sea. On the right, houses mark the towns along the north-western coast. They can be identified by inscriptions in Greek.
The drawing is based on a document held by the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris.
