Front view of a possible reconstruction of the Dura-Europos shield. The drawing is in portrait format and has no frame.
It is a cartographic representation on a leather fragment. The region depicted is the Pont-Euxin, i.e. the basin of today’s Black Sea. In the center, boats are sailing on the sea. On the right, houses mark the towns along the north-western coast. They can be identified by inscriptions in Greek. A compass rose is depicted in the bottom right-hand corner of the drawing.
The drawing was inspired by a document in the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris.
