Front view of the Incarnate Word district of Lugdunum (Lyon). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink.
The scene is located at the peribolus gate. The temple can be seen in the background. Several figures, dressed in white togas and crowned with golden laurels, march in a procession. They stand at the foot of a statue of Emperor Claudius, represented with the attributes of Jupiter, the eagle and the scepter.
The temple is inspired by a bas-relief from a Claudian altar in Rome’s Villa Medici, while the procession is based on a bas-relief from the Ara Pacis. The statue of Claudius as Jupiter is inspired by the one in Rome’s Vatican Museum.
