Front view of an alleyway below the Three Gauls amphitheater in Lugdunum (Lyon). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the margins.
The scene depicts the local craft industry. As several figures climb the stairs of an alley below the amphitheater, artisans can be seen at work. Stores develop on the left of the drawing, and shoemakers work on the right.
The design is inspired by several bas-reliefs. The central group is taken from a Cintugnatus family stele in the Bordeaux Museum. The two shoemakers are taken from a relief in the Musée de Chalon-sur-Saône and another in the Musée de Bourges.
