Front view of the Lugdunum market (Lyon). The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
Several stalls are set up in a square. In the foreground, a fruit vendor and rabbit cages can be seen. Covered shacks sell meat. Foodstuffs hang from them.
The scene is taken from several bas-reliefs. The couple on the left is a representation of the funeral bust of the bride and groom, preserved in the Vatican Museum in Rome. The couple on the right is inspired by a funerary relief in Rome’s Via Statilia. The first boutique on the right is taken from a bas-relief in Ostia.
