Presentation :

Aerial view of Leptis Magna at the time of Septimius Severus. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. It is painted on a cut-out sheet glued to a second one depicting the sea and ships. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The town is located on the Mediterranean coast. A port is visible in the background, on the right of the drawing. The temple of Jupiter stands along the quays. The city is organized along an artery lined with columns and embellished with a nymphaeum. Hadrian’s baths can be seen in the foreground. They are flanked by a palestra. Nearby is the Severan forum. It comprises a vast courtyard lined with porticoes, a temple and the basilica. The old forum and curia are behind it, near the coast. The theater can be seen on the left-hand side of the drawing. The chalcidicum stands at its feet.
