Aerial view of the Lambaesis camp (Lambèse) in the 3rd century. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
The town is at the center of the drawing. It is surrounded by fields. A vast quadrangular enclosure and moat protect it. It is punctuated by towers and pierced by four gates. The two main roads, the cardo (north-south axis) and the decumanus (east-west axis), are lined with porticoes. A quadruple triumphal arch stands at their intersection. It is flanked on the right by a building with a vast courtyard surrounded by porticoes. This is the praetorium, the heart of the camp, with the legion legate’s residence, administrative buildings and chapels dedicated to Mars, Minerva and Augustus. The amphitheatre is located outside the enclosure.
