Front view of the Artemisia sanctuary in Ephesus (Ephesus). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
The representation shows the sanctuary from the cella door. Two priests make offerings before the statue of Artemis. She is seated inside a niche formed by two Corinthian columns supporting an entablature and a sculpted group. The goddess Artemis of Ephesus is a fertility goddess. She is depicted with a multitude of breasts on her chest (polymastia).
