Presentation :

Aerial view of the sanctuary of Apollo at Cyrenae (Cyrene), 2nd century AD. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins. The same black ink drawing appears on the reverse.
The sanctuary is located on a hillside. It comprises several monuments. A theater-amphitheater is built in the upper part of the drawing. It is preceded by a terraced wall, the Nikomachos wall, which attenuated the sound coming from the theater. An unidentified temple stands nearby. The sanctuary develops in the lower part of the drawing. It is dominated by the temple of Apollo. Surrounding it (from left to right) are temples dedicated to Jason Magnus, Hades, the Dioscuri, Hecate and Artemis. The propylaea and strategeion are in the lower left-hand corner. Stairs lead up to the fountain of Apollo and the grotto of Apollo’s priests.
