Aerial view of Carthago (Carthage), late 2nd century. The drawing is in landscape format and has no frame. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The city is located on the Mediterranean coast, visible in the upper part of the drawing. In the foreground, the forum can be seen atop the Byrsa hill. It comprises a vast rectangular courtyard lined with porticoes, the basilica and several temples. The large public square of the ancient agora lies to the rear, below. Its two harbours can be seen nearby. The first is rectangular in shape. A lighthouse lines the entrance to the channel. The second harbor is circular. It is made up of loggias of ships arranged around the admiral’s command post, located on a central islet. Mountains rise up in the distance.
