View of the Antoninian baths in Carthago (Carthage), 3rd century. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
Thermal baths are built on the Mediterranean coast. They are set within a vast courtyard lined with porticoes. The rooms are arranged symmetrically around a central axis, the baths. The gymnasiums are at either end of the courtyard. They are flanked by a peristyle or palestra. Nearby domed buildings house the changing rooms. The first accessible room is the tepidarium. Perpendicular to it is the frigidarium. On the lower level are the swimming pools. To the rear, the domed rooms house the caldarium.
