Front view of the Saint-Christoly port area in Burdigala (Bordeaux). The drawing is in landscape format. It is arranged within a frame drawn in ink. Inscriptions and traces of watercolor are visible in the right-hand margin, the only one to have survived. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The scene depicts port activity. In the foreground, on the docks, people are carrying goods, others are selling them, and some are waiting for cargo to arrive. A number of boats, in various shapes and forms, move along the quays of La Devèze. In the background, warehouses store goods. Several stacks of amphorae of various shapes can be seen.
The towing scene was inspired by a bas-relief from Cabrières-d’Aigues, kept at the Musée Calvet in Avignon.
