Front view of Claude’s nymphaeum in the Villa des Pisons at Baiae (Baïes). The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. Construction lines appear on the reverse.
The villa’s nymphaeum is arranged inside a rectangular room ending in a semicircular apse, which houses a sculpted group. The walls are decorated with niches and statues. The room is covered by a barrel vault. A rectangular basin stands in the center of the room. Several figures entertain themselves on boats. The triclinium is arranged around the pool. People recline comfortably on benches. Jugs and bowls are arranged on small round tables.
