Aerial view of Augusta Treverorum (Trier). The drawing is in landscape format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins.
The town is located along the Moselle River, inside a huge fortified enclosure. It was built on an orthogonal checkerboard plan. The forum stands at the intersection of the cardo (north-south axis) and the decumanus (east-west axis). Three thermal baths and their palaces are nearby. White smoke indicates that furnaces were in operation to heat the air and water for the baths. The amphitheatre and circus are located along the city wall, outside the urban fabric. A stone bridge crosses the river, not far from a temple.
The theater is on the opposite bank, to the right of the drawing. Green plains unfold in the distance.
