Aerial view of the Acropolis at Athenae (Athens), 5th century BC. The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
At the center of the drawing is a rocky outcrop on which several temples stand. They are protected by an enclosure. A long staircase leads up to the propylaeum, a monumental porticoed entrance. Figures climb the steps in procession. The statue of Athena stands at the back. The Temple of Artemis is on the right-hand side of the drawing. It precedes the Parthenon. The Erechtheion is on the left. The city grows at the foot of the Acropolis.
