Front view of the interior of the Arelate theater (Arles). The drawing is in portrait format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The scene represents the theater in Arles, where a performance is taking place. In the foreground, the population is distributed over three levels, corresponding to the different social classes: the most noble seats are positioned in the lower part of the cavea. The actors are shown on stage in front of the stage wall (frons scaenae), a three-tiered structure decorated with colorful columns and sculptures. The central niche features a statue of Augustus.
