Aerial view of the Porte d’Auguste in Arelate (Arles). The drawing is in landscape format. It is framed in ink. Traces of watercolor are visible in the margins. Inscriptions appear on the reverse.
The lower part of the drawing depicts a road leading into the city. It is lined with numerous sculpted sarcophagi. The wall, made of rubble stone, is pierced by a gate. Two towers frame three round-arched bays of varying heights. The whole is crowned with battlements. Behind it are the dwellings.
