Aerial view of the Arelate forum (Arles). The drawing is in portrait format. It is organized within a frame drawn in ink. Some traces of watercolor and inscriptions are visible in the margins. A sketch is visible on the back.
The forum is built at the intersection of the cardo (north-south axis) and decumanus (east-west axis). It is organized around a vast courtyard surrounded by a colonnaded portico, visible in the lower part of the drawing. An open-air market is located below. You can see the merchants and their stalls. To the rear, an elongated courtyard, ending in an exedra at either end, opens onto a temple surrounded by a U-shaped colonnaded portico. In the distance, outside the city, you can see the circus and the river.
