L’Esprit des lieux : New collection directed by J-C Golvin

CNRS Editions

Collection directed by Jean-Claude Golvin.

Each book in the collection, based on the achievements of scientific research, aims to discover the originality, personality, spirit of places that will be discussed. The text will be written with the greatest clarity along a strong axis that should unambiguously be underlined by a subtitle. It will never be a kind of guide, or a history of art, but a thematic work reflecting what, in the eyes of the author, is the deep interest of history that it will evoke in relation to a precise geographic and monumental framework.

The collection is not intended to publish manuscripts already written. On the contrary, it will be necessary to define, in collaboration with the author and in an initial phase of dialogue with the publisher, the spirit of the book that will be written especially for it and in particular the axis of the speech and the synopsis.

The collection pays particular attention to the development, in collaboration with the author, of two or three credible and evocative images of key places.

This collection is intended for as wide an audience as possible of readers eager to cultivate themselves. It is recommended to avoid the use of too many specialized words. Those that will be considered indispensable may be included in a concise glossary. Similarly it will be necessary to avoid the footnotes. A limited bibliography will give the main references to books to which the reader curious to deepen his knowledge can refer.

In the text that will not exceed 330,000 characters (or 280 pages maximum) can be integrated boxes. The number of illustrations, which will be captioned in a meaningful way, will not exceed a hundred. Most of them will be black and white and some, particularly beautiful, in color. In addition to their documentary character, these images will have a real aesthetic quality and should ideally be free of rights.

The collection is not intended to be a substitute for specialized scientific works such as those listed in the bibliography. Its role is to make discover to the public what justifies its title: the meaning, the intelligence, the renewed interest of "the spirit of the places".
